Wednesday on the eve of yet another neighborhood war between Englewood and Hyde Park, we dropped in at the home of the Eagles of Englewood located at 63rd. & Stewart on Chicago’s south side.  These teams have gone at it twice this season with the Eagles coming out on top each time. Now the stakes are highest, as these two Red-East rivals square off in the Chicago Public League playoff quarterfinals.

Englewood head coach Louis Adams, who is in his fourth year here and whose entire roster is composed of seniors knows what brought him and his team this far. “We stress defense here before anything,” he said at Wednesdays practice. “We’re a very aggressive team and putting pressure on the ball is what we do well.”

Offensively the team has it’s table set by forward Demarkus Jones. Averaging 21 points per game and 8 rebounds this season, Adams realizes he’s a force on both sides of the court. “He has been brilliant for us,” he stated. “But also Nicholas Waddell (center) and Dominick Daniels(guard/forward) have been good for us. They all have come into their own this year.”

Adams deflects attention away from his own personal situation at the close of this season and instead shines the light on his players. After all this will be the final season of Englewood basketball, as the school splits apart into other entities at the close of the 2007-2008 year. “I’ll be alright,” he said “But it’s my players that matter. I want to win some games but mostly get these boys into school (college). After that I’ll let the chips fall where they may”.  Hyde Park vs. Englewood is set for 4pm Thursday (2/14) at Englewood.
