CHICAGO WRESTLING BROTHERS LOOKING AHEAD
Chicago, IL.  By Michael Kosman
Life has a way of taking those unexpected twists and turns, and for Wilbur Wright College wrestler Jameel Carter the ability to navigate along that pathway successfully seems to be a never ending battle. Along with his brother Jamal, the both of them are what one rarely found in the Chicago Public school system---two exceptionally talented wrestlers.  They both plied their trade at Uplift Community High School on Chicago’s north side.  Like most of Chicago’s prep athletics, as it pertains to grappling, Uplift is not exactly known as a hotbed of success.  But it’s where the both of them made their marks and earned their stellar reputations. Also before anyone thinks funny thoughts, these brothers are a team and are going nowhere unless it’s together. If its at Uplift or now at Wright, definitely the next school that may include this talented twosome as student athletes must have them mutually.

Jameel and his brother are two engaging and positive young men. It is easy to spot that the both of them were brought up well and followed their mentors advice. A very real mentor is their head coach at Wright, Eric Wetzel, who has been in both of their lives since they were young boys. As is the case with the good and caring coaches out there, Wetzel is an influence and an authority with much more than wrestling, but also with life matters. Jameel has the utmost respect and reverence for his coaches opinions and judgments, and Wetzel will play a significant role with what happens next.

Athletics fascinates us and endears us towards not only the action but the players who form the action.  Jameel Carter is one of those players. We look to people like him to be a positive role model for others soon, not only for what he does on the matt (or the football field, where he also excels and has a keen eye on returning to the gridiron) but away from the playing field as well. As Carter seeks out another school , one that may have a football program, he still has to deal with the present. That’s  where those unforeseen bends and curves recently displayed themselves. No sooner did we meet up with Mr. Carter, his season  has been put on an abrupt hold due to a bacterial medical condition. Although it suddenly appears that he may not wrestle anymore this year, his prospects are excellent for a full recovery for next season, wherever that school may be that he attends and whatever that sport may be that he plays. Because of their beliefs and the support system that surrounds them, Jameel and Jamal will be just fine.
